The parable of the two sons — Pentecost 18

Tomorrow’s Readings — Pentecost 18

As we gather our thoughts and hearts for tomorrow’s service, let’s reflect on the theme of faithful obedience and divine patience. From the Israelites’ grumbling at Massah, to Paul’s call for unity through humility, to Jesus’ parable of the two sons who react differently to their father’s request—each reading echoes with questions of intention, action, and sincerity. Let these stories test our hearts: Are we like the son who says ‘no’ but shows up, or the one who promises but evades? As we prepare, let’s open ourselves to the challenge of being doers of the Word, not just hearers.

Liturgical Reflection: “O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.”

A Prayer for Saturday:

Gracious God, as we stand on the cusp of Sunday, prepare our hearts to receive your Word with both humility and courage. May we, like Jesus, seek to understand others rather than judge, to love rather than condemn. Let the living water of your Spirit quench our thirst in the deserts of doubt and fear. As we meditate on the faithfulness of those who have gone before us, inspire us to walk in the light of Christ, embodying your love in our actions. Unite us in one mind and spirit, that we may shine as a beacon of hope and truth in this world. Amen.
