Ever wondered what a religious resume might look like? In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he lists his—and promptly declares it all rubbish. Written to a community grappling with identity and belonging, Paul’s words in Philippians 3:4b-14 challenge us to rethink what truly matters in our spiritual journey today.
Paul’s letter to the Philippians is a treasure trove of radical redefinitions. Spoken from a Roman prison, his words pulse with urgency and love for a community that’s trying to find its place amidst external pressures and internal conflicts. Paul writes not just as an apostle but as someone who understands the confines of human expectation—and what’s truly liberating beyond it.
In verses 4b-14, he lays bare his extensive religious qualifications, only to toss them aside in favour of a new goal: “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” This isn’t just about heaven in the sweet by and by; it’s a call to live in radical alignment with love, justice, and community here and now. Forgetting what’s behind means letting go of our curated identities to embrace transformation.
Through a progressive lens, today’s church can find a potent message in this passage. Paul invites us to question the status quo: What societal norms or church traditions are we clinging to that might be distracting us from our true calling? It’s a clarion call to discard exclusion and embrace a church where all are welcome, and everyone belongs. In a world hungry for justice, our pressing forward means dismantling barriers and building bridges.
In the Anglican tradition, this sentiment finds echoes in our worship and liturgy. In the Collects of the Book of Common Prayer, we’re often reminded of God’s transformative grace—our liturgical calls to “guide us in the way of justice and truth” are mirrored in Paul’s exhortation to press on. We’re shaped in the rhythm of confession and absolution, a practice of letting go of past grievances and striving toward a compassionate community.
A Prayer for Thursday:
God of new beginnings, help us to leave behind the distractions that hold us back. May we press on, not with eyes set on our own accomplishments, but toward the inclusive love and justice you call us to live. Guide us in courage and grace, that we might embody your kingdom in our communities today. Amen.
