The Vineyard Gatekeepers Nobody Noticed

The parable of the wicked tenants isn’t just about those who worked the fields and turned against the landowner. It’s also a story about the people on the fringes — the ones we often overlook, both then and now. Let’s turn our attention to those often left at the edges of the narrative.

Imagine the vineyard, bustling with life and the daily toil of those unseen, the ones not directly in the parable — the silent bystanders. The children playing in the corners, the women carrying water, the servants whose voices are drowned out by the chaos of greed and betrayal. These are the characters the parable doesn’t name, but whose lives are directly impacted by the actions of the wicked tenants.

As these unnamed figures watch the unfolding drama, how do they perceive the injustice? They are the collateral damage in the tenants’ refusal to honour their obligations — innocents caught in a power struggle. Their silent witness challenges us to consider who is marginalized in our own communities, ignored while decisions made by those in power ripple through their lives.

This parable raises a pointed question for the church today: Who are the gatekeepers of our vineyards, and who are the overlooked? In our communities, who’s given a voice, and who remains silent? The uncomfortable truth is that, like the tenants, we often prioritize our interests, forgetting the wider community affected by our choices.

Yet, the good news is that God’s kingdom is for the overlooked, the marginalized, and the silenced. In a real community, this looks like lifting up those voices, inviting them not just to the table but to speak and shape the conversation. It is about realizing that the vineyard — the community — thrives when everyone is acknowledged and cherished.

Get ready for Sunday with this thought: As we gather, may we be alert to the voices we haven’t heard and the lives we haven’t noticed.

A Prayer for Friday:

God of the unseen and unheard, open our eyes to those we overlook. May we honour every life in our vineyard and work towards true community. Give us courage to amplify the voices from the margins. Amen.
